Teacher Trip 2: Half Day Trip to SeJong

Another fun trip with the administrators, staff and faculty. This week two limousine buses took about 60 of my coworkers and I to a new city which many newly married, young couples are moving.  SeJong is about an hour drive from Gao-dong. The park had a musical water fountain that performed at two or three scheduled times. The park is a lovely picnic area and concert or festival location. There are plenty of places to sit and relax. I was told, on the weekends there are paddle boats available to row through the man-made lake. There is also a historical museum on the vast property. 
While we were there, we visited the presidential museum, a historical archive of all South Korea's presidents, their accomplishments and important facts and memorabilia. It was a nice experience, that I do not think I would have had without my administrators putting the plans in motion. There were gifts from many presidents to previous South Korean presidents, including from the Obamas. I was pleased to see the (former) POTUS and FLOTUS's present proudly displayed, among other well-respected world leaders. After a day outdoors and in the museum we had dinner together closer to our school. It was a great experience. 

As always the spread was plentiful and delicious.

Open-Class

Yesterday, one of my coteachers and I attended an open-class at an elementary school in 20 minute walking distance of our school. I enjoyed the experience, for many reasons. I chose to attend, because this is a public school with 999 elementary students*. The open-class was a general 40 minute English class for 28 students in E-4 (4th grade);  there were 15 girls and 13 boys. On average the elementary students in this school experience instruction, 80% English and 20% Korean. Approximately 90% of the class was taught in English. Open-class, as I understand it, is a scheduled class where parents, faculty, administrators and academic guests are welcome to sit in the back of a classroom and observe the teaching, students, materials, lesson/s, etc. The invitation was provided about two weeks in advance. Students are the real teachers.

Today, I taught a lesson on Conflict Resolution to 24 Philadelphia high school students. It felt great being in front of (and walking around) the classroom. Of course I was nervous before stepping foot into the school, but I was well prepared and focused on the ultimate goal - which was to teach students how to handle on the job conflict constructively. The education course I am enrolled includes teaching a lesson to high school students, with a classmate (or coteacher). We had three major points we wanted to drive home: 1. Prevent conflict We briefly discussed how clear communication as well as considering cultural differences to prevent conflict. 2. Avoid conflict When a coworker is pressing an issue and appears to want to engage in a confrontation, try listening to their perspective and problem. WebQuests

Hola! Today's topic for educators are WebQuests (WQs).  What are WQs, you say? Before today, I had never heard of WQs.   A WQ is an inquiry-oriented lesson format that incorporates all parts of Bloom's Taxonomy.  Much of or all gathered information that learners work with is from the Internet.  The model was introduced to the world by a professor at the San Diego State University, who was assisted by a member of the Educational Technology staff at the San Diego Unified School District, and members of the Teach the Teachers Consortium.  [The names of these individuals are purposely absent, because there may be a WQ created for you to find their names on your own dear reader.] The announcement was released in February of 1995.  Where have I been?!
